With Ice Cube making a surprise cameo, anticipation continued to build around Paul Rudd and Jack Black’s reimagined take on the cult classic Anaconda, set deep within the perilous Amazon rainforest. Director Tom Gormican and co-writer Kevin Etten recently spoke about their creative approach to reinventing the 1997 film for a new generation.
Rather than delivering a straightforward update of the original, Gormican and Etten chose a more playful and unconventional direction. Reflecting on the early development, Etten explained, “Tom and I felt we were not the guys for a traditional updating of Anaconda. But the more we thought about it, we realized there was an opportunity to have fun with it. We saw the potential to create big laughs and comedic moments, and at the same time, scare the audience and ground the characters, so you’re rooting for them to succeed. We focused on giving the audience a fun ride and not letting them off it.”
The filmmakers leaned into the unforgiving nature of the Amazon as a backdrop that could support both tension and humour. Gormican noted that finding the right tonal balance took time. “It was a long process to arrive at a tone that satisfied our appetite for each genre we attempted to blend. But as always, we relied on great actors to help us bridge the gaps. If the characters took whatever was happening seriously, it would allow the stakes to be real and their unpreparedness for the jungle to be funny,” he said.
Blending comedy, adventure, and suspense, the new Anaconda aimed to deliver an entertaining cinematic experience while still respecting the core elements that made the original film memorable.
Sony Pictures Entertainment India releases Anaconda in India on December 25 in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
