Bollywood icon Rani Mukerji has opened up about motherhood, parenting in the age of Generation Alpha, and her adorable yet fearless bond with her 10-year-old daughter Adira Chopra. In a candid conversation on Zoom’s YouTube podcast series Spotlight Sessions, Rani revealed how raising a Gen Alpha child is completely different from how she herself was brought up.
With her trademark honesty and humour, Rani shared, “She also fires me. She is Gen Alpha, so she fires me, and I have to listen to her. Every generation changes. I used to get slaps from my mom. I can’t expect to do that with her because she would slap me back.” Laughing, she recalled a recent incident: “She was jumping in the house while the National Awards were happening. It’s very sweet, but because she is an Alpha kid, I am very scared of her.”
Rani also spoke about Adira’s unique relationship with her films. Despite being the daughter of one of Bollywood’s biggest stars, Adira hasn’t watched all of Rani’s movies — and there’s a touching reason why. “She likes seeing me when I’m dancing or when I’m happy on screen. She loves Hichki, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, and Bunty Aur Babli. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was tough for her because in the first scene, I die, so she couldn’t go beyond that,” Rani explained.
The actress added another sweet detail about how her daughter sees her off-screen. “When I’m wearing makeup, she tells me, ‘Mamma, you are not looking like my mother.’ And when I remove my makeup and come to her, she says, ‘Now you look like my mother.’”
Rani married filmmaker Aditya Chopra in a private ceremony in April 2014, keeping their personal life away from public attention. The couple welcomed their daughter Adira in December 2015, and have since maintained a fiercely private family life, rarely sharing glimpses of their daughter with the media.
On the professional front, Rani is preparing for her highly anticipated return to the big screen with Mardaani 3. Written by Aayush Gupta, directed by Abhiraj Minwala, and produced by Aditya Chopra, the third installment of the popular franchise is set to hit theatres on January 30, 2026.
