A Mumbai court has issued an ad-interim injunction against popular YouTuber Ajey Nagar, better known as Carry Minati, restraining him and associated parties from publishing or circulating allegedly defamatory content against filmmaker Karan Johar.
The order was passed on Monday, February 9, after Johar approached the court objecting to a roast-style video titled Coffee With Jalan, uploaded on Carry Minati’s YouTube channel. The video was reportedly inspired by Johar’s celebrity talk show Koffee With Karan and allegedly included abusive language and remarks targeting Bollywood nepotism, with specific references to the filmmaker.
Upon reviewing the matter, Judge Pandurang Bhosale observed that the content appeared prima facie defamatory and warranted urgent intervention. In the ad-interim order, the court noted that the statements made in the video, along with the language used, were objectionable and required immediate action.
“Prima facie it appears that Ajey Nagar and Deepak Char (manager of Carry Minati channel) have made defamatory statements and used vulgar language against the plaintiff. These videos need to be taken down immediately. There should be injunction against all those who circulate and re-circulate these videos on the social media platform. This is a fit case to pass ad-interim injunction orders against the defendants,” the court stated.
In addition to directing the removal of the video, the court issued John Doe orders. These orders extend protection against unidentified individuals who may attempt to circulate or re-circulate the contested content across social media platforms. The directive aims to prevent further dissemination while the matter remains under judicial consideration.
As part of the relief sought by Johar, the court has restrained the defendants from creating or sharing similar content concerning him until further orders are passed. The injunction applies not only to Ajey Nagar but also to Meta Platforms and other related entities to ensure compliance across digital platforms.
The case highlights ongoing tensions between public figures and online content creators regarding satire, roast culture, and defamation laws. While roast videos and parody content are common on digital platforms, the court’s order underscores that such content remains subject to legal scrutiny when it crosses into alleged defamation.
