Netflix is tearing into the first official trailer for The Rip, a high-stakes crime thriller that reunites longtime collaborators Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.
The official plot synopsis for the Joe Carnahan-directed film, which takes its title from a police slang term for seizing illegal goods, reads: “Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question —including who they can rely on.”
Joining Damon and Affleck’s seasoned Miami detectives are younger cops played by Steven Yeun and Teyana Taylor, the former Maxim cover star who won raves for her breakout performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s acclaimed One Battle After Another.
The Rip, which is reportedly inspired by real events, may be billed as a “gritty, throwback action-thriller,” but Indiewire notes that it “invites comparison to stunt-heavy heist films like The Fast and the Furious and corrupt-cop movies like Training Day, which makes sense given Carnahan’s breakout film was 2002’s Ray Liotta-led Narc.”
The project is the latest from Artists Equity, the artist-led production company founded by Damon and Affleck in 2022. The Good Will Hunting duo previously collaborated under the banner for their 2023 hit Air, following the saga of Michael Jordan signing with Nike.
The Rip‘s release marks a busy start to 2026 for both stars. Damon is set to lead Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey later this summer, while Affleck is currently developing the Netflix original Animals, which he will both direct and star in alongside Yeun.
The Rip will skip a theatrical release and streams exclusively on Netflix starting Jan. 16. Watch the official trailer below.
