When Simone Ashley first appeared as Kate Sharma in Bridgerton Season 2, she did not just become a fan favorite, she became one of the defining forces of the series. As Anthony Bridgerton’s love interest and eventual Viscountess, Kate was positioned as the new head of the Bridgerton household, a woman sharp, resilient, and capable of running an estate as confidently as she handled Anthony himself. So when Season 4 teased her return after the drama of its first half, expectations were understandably sky high. And yet, now that the episodes have dropped, a growing section of the fandom is asking a difficult question: has Bridgerton sidelined Kate again?
Season 4 brings Kate and Anthony back as parents to their newborn son, Edmund. On paper, this should have been a victory lap. Fans were ready to see Kate fully step into her role as Viscountess, hosting balls, managing the estate, commanding the household staff, and balancing motherhood with authority. Many were particularly excited to see how Anthony would react to Benedict’s questionable management decisions in his absence, expecting tension, humor, and classic Bridgerton sibling chaos. Instead, what viewers got felt noticeably restrained.
Kate’s screen time is limited compared to other leading ladies of the franchise. Unlike Daphne in Season 1 or Penelope in later seasons, Kate never receives a full wedding sequence, only a dreamlike montage that left many feeling shortchanged. For a character who carried Season 2 emotionally, fans argue that the lack of a grand ceremony felt like a missed opportunity.
The handling of baby Edmund has also become a point of contention online. In several episodes, Penelope is seen holding Edmund more prominently than Kate herself. Viewers have pointed out that while Kate is technically the Viscountess and mother of the heir, scenes that could have reinforced that authority instead place her in the background. Social media discussions highlight moments where Edmund is present, yet Kate is not central to those scenes. A single reel featuring Kate and Anthony holding Edmund reportedly crossed millions of views quickly, reinforcing how invested the audience remains in their story.
Another critique centers around geography and presence. While Kate is now head of the Bridgerton household, much of her time is spent at Aubrey Hall in the countryside. Fans expected to see her preside over London’s social season, host balls, and establish her leadership publicly. Instead, some feel she has been narratively tucked away. Even her response to Francesca’s devastating loss, sending flowers rather than appearing in person, struck some viewers as inconsistent with the fiercely loyal Kate introduced earlier.
Costume and styling choices have also been dissected. Viewers accustomed to Kate’s bold silhouettes and strong visual presence in Season 2 noticed softer, more subdued styling choices this season. Whether intentional or not, fans argue it contributes to a diminished aura.
Bridgerton has precedent here. After Season 1, Regé-Jean Page’s exit as Simon Basset led to Daphne’s presence being significantly reduced in subsequent seasons. Now, some fear Kate may face a similar fate as the narrative shifts focus to new couples.
With Season 5 on the horizon and speculation mounting about which Bridgerton sibling will lead next, fans are clear about one thing. They do not want Kate Sharma reduced to a background character. As Viscountess, mother, and one half of one of the show’s most electric pairings, she remains central to the Bridgerton legacy. Whether the writer’s course-correct remains to be seen. But for now, the conversation is loud, passionate, and very much in Kate’s corner.
