Scarlett Johansson to Star in Mike Flanagan’s ‘Fresh, Bold’ Exorcist Film – What to Expect!

0

Actor Scarlett Johansson is set to star in the next instalment of the iconic ‘Exorcist’ film series, produced by Universal Pictures and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. The announcement comes as Universal continues its effort to revitalise the long-standing horror franchise. Acclaimed filmmaker Mike Flanagan, known for Doctor Sleep and The Life of Chuck, will write, direct, and produce the new project, which is being described as a significant reimagining of the series.

The original Exorcist, directed by William Friedkin in 1973, became a landmark in horror cinema. It followed Ellen Burstyn’s character, a mother seeking help from two priests to exorcise her possessed daughter, portrayed by Linda Blair. The film was both a critical and commercial success, grossing $441 million worldwide and receiving ten Academy Award nominations.

Johansson’s casting follows Universal’s previous attempt to launch a new trilogy after acquiring the rights for $400 million in 2021. The first film in that effort, The Exorcist: Believer (2023), brought back Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil and introduced new characters. Despite earning $136 million globally, the film did not generate enough momentum to continue the trilogy. The upcoming film will take place within the same universe as the 1973 classic but will not continue the story of Believer. Plot details and additional cast members have not yet been disclosed, with production planned for New York City.

Flanagan praised Johansson’s involvement, stating, “Scarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real, from genre films to summer blockbusters. I couldn’t be happier to have her join this Exorcist film.” Johansson recently helped revive major franchises, including Universal’s Jurassic World Rebirth, which earned $868 million worldwide.

She also made her directorial debut with Eleanor the Great and is celebrated for her Academy Award-nominated performances in Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit.

Further updates on the film, including release dates and casting announcements, are expected from Universal and Blumhouse as production progresses.

Sonali Bendre clarifies after backlash over comments on autophagy in Cancer recovery: “I am certainly not a quack”

Bollywood actor and cancer-survivor Sonali Bendre recently responded to the criticism she faced after sharing a post about her recovery journey, in which she credited part of her healing to the process of autophagy.

In her clarification, she wrote, “I have never claimed to be a doctor, but I am certainly not a quack either. I am a cancer survivor, someone who has lived through the fear, pain, uncertainty, and rebuilding that the disease brings.”
She further explained, “Everything I have ever spoken has been my experience and my learning. As I’ve repeatedly said, no two cancers are the same and no treatment path is identical. One of the many protocols I personally explored, after thorough research and medical guidance, was autophagy. It made a difference for me then and continues to do so today, for me.”
She also added, “What truly matters is open, respectful dialogue. We don’t all have to agree, but we should avoid dismissing one another simply because we lean toward different approaches. Each person must choose what feels right, safe and empowering for them. I will always share my journey with honesty and humility, never as a prescription, but as a lived experience.”
The issue arose after Bendre’s post mentioned how her naturopath introduced her to autophagy and she continued, “In 2018, when I was diagnosed with cancer, my naturopath introduced me to a study called Autophagy. It played a huge role in my recovery. So I read, learned, experimented… and slowly built it into my routine. And I’ve continued to follow it ever since.”
However, several medical professionals responded critically. Hepatologist Cyriac Abby Philips (aka “The Liver Doc”) wrote on social media, “Dear Ms. Bendre… I expected better from you.” He added that celebrity cancer survivors are an important resource for cancer patients and their families when it comes to science-based therapeutic journeys. “You are not helping here, by promoting quackery.”
Sonali Bendre was diagnosed in 2018 with stage-4 metastatic cancer and later underwent treatment in the U.S., ultimately being declared cancer-free.

‘Wicked’ Writer Talks Meaning Behind Glinda’s Final Moment with the Grimmerie

'Wicked' Writer Talks Meaning Behind Glinda's Final Moment with the Grimmerie

The co-screenwriter of the movie Wicked: For Good is opening up about the meaning behind that final shot of Ariana Grande‘s Glinda with the Grimmerie at the end of the movie.

This post contains spoilers, so beware of reading further if you don’t want to know what happens!

Keep reading to find out more…

At the end of Wicked: For Good, Glinda believes that Elphaba has died and she has been entrusted with the Grimmerie, the magic book of spells. Even though she doesn’t know how to read it, Elphaba gives Glinda the book and encourages her to learn.

In the final moments of the movie, Glinda is looking at the book and it magically opens for her, seemingly signaling that she either has earned the gift of magic or Elphaba has given it to her.

Dana Fox co-wrote the movies with Broadway writer Winnie Holzman. She opened up about that moment in a new interview with Deadline.

“The other thing that kills me dead is when Elphaba gives Glinda the Grimmerie and Glinda finally says, ‘You know I can’t read that.’ I die. To me, that performance and the fact that she says that and has that moment — that is her deepest shame,” Dana said. “In the film, we created the scene where you see her as a child, her deep want and need, and the original wound she has, and you understand how hard it is for Glinda to say she can’t access that magic. That’s the hardest thing for her to say and admit.”

She added, “The fact that she admits it, to me, is why I think she earns the Grimmerie opening to her at the end of the film, which is also not in the play.”

Dana still is leaving it open for interpretation.

Winnie and I are desperate for all that to be open to everyone else’s interpretation. And we love how much people feel like they can find themselves in these movies, and they can figure out whether they think it means this or that. And at the end, when Elphaba smiles and you can’t tell, it’s like, did she open it for her? Does she know that it opened for her? Did she feel it opening for her? What is that? That should be everyone’s moment to decide how they want it to be and how they feel about it. I get chills just thinking about that ending, though. I love it so much,” Dana added.

The director of Wicked is also opening up about the very final shot of the movie, with Glinda whispering into Elphaba’s ear.

Ranbir Kapoor’s Surprise Entry in Prabhas’ Spirit Will Leave You Speechless

Ranbir Kapoor’s Surprise Entry in Prabhas’ Spirit Will Leave You Speechless

After weeks of rumours, exits, and speculation, Spirit finally moved forward as director Sandeep Reddy Vanga launched the film with a grand muhurat ceremony in Hyderabad on Sunday. What fans did not anticipate, however, was the sudden surge of fresh excitement that followed—sparked by strong reports claiming that Ranbir Kapoor will appear in a special cameo in the Prabhas-led film.

The project commenced its first schedule with a traditional, star-studded launch event, graced by megastar Chiranjeevi, who attended as the chief guest. Photos from the ceremony showed Vanga and the team offering prayers before officially beginning work on one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year.

According to a Deccan Chronicle report, Ranbir Kapoor—who previously delivered a massive hit with Vanga in Animal—will feature in Spirit at a key turning point in the narrative. The cameo is being described as “historic,” as it would mark the first time Ranbir and Prabhas appear together on screen. A source quoted in the report said, “Ranbir will come into the picture at a crucial juncture of the storytelling. It will be a turning point in the plot and a historic moment in Indian cinema since he has never shared screen space with Prabhas.” The possibility of two major stars uniting under Vanga’s direction has already set social media buzzing.

The muhurat ceremony itself was memorable, with Chiranjeevi performing the traditional clap. Vanga later expressed gratitude, writing, “Heartfelt thank you to our MEGASTAR CHIRANJEEVI sir for blessing the event. Your gesture is unforgettable.”

Triptii Dimri, who replaced Deepika Padukone as the female lead, was in attendance, joining a cast that includes Prabhas, Vivek Oberoi, Prakash Raj, and Kanchana. Although Prabhas was absent from the muhurat, Vanga shared a photo of him holding the clapboard, telling fans it was enough to “excite” them.

Spirit has made headlines for months, especially after Deepika Padukone’s exit, reportedly due to disagreements over an eight-hour workday. She later stepped away from Kalki 2898 AD 2 as well, keeping her departure in the spotlight.
