A while ago, news of the 89 year old veteran actor Dharmendra breathing his last made the headlines. As Bollywood heads to pay their last respects, we bring you some fond memories of the star.
Sholay, the iconic film starring Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan, is celebrated as one of the greatest classics in Indian cinema. Crafted by the legendary duo Salim-Javed, the film is renowned not only for its memorable dialogues and stellar performances but also for its fascinating behind-the-scenes stories. Among these tales, one stands out for its shocking intensity: did you know that Dharmendra accidentally fired a real gun at Amitabh Bachchan during the filming?
Dharmendra Nearly Shot Amitabh Bachchan With A Gun On Sholay Sets
During the shooting of Sholay, Dharmendra, in a moment of frustration, inadvertently fired a live bullet past Amitabh Bachchan’s ear. Amitabh recounted this incident during an episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati in 2020. He explained that during a climactic scene, Dharmendra was positioned below on the set, while he was on a hill. Dharmendra was supposed to pick up ammunition from a trunk multiple times. Frustration mounted after several failed attempts, and in a moment of irritation, Dharmendra loaded a real cartridge into the gun and pulled the trigger. Amitabh described hearing a ‘whoosh’ as the bullet narrowly missed his ear, passing just past him. Thankfully, he was unharmed.

The story surfaced when CRPF DIG Preet Mohan Singh, a contestant on the show, shared her admiration for Sholay and commented on the film’s climax. She speculated that if Veeru (Dharmendra) had more bullets, he might have been able to save Jai (Amitabh Bachchan). In response, Big B shared this startling behind-the-scenes anecdote, revealing how close they came to tragedy.
He elaborated, “When we were shooting for that scene, Dharmendra was below, and I was on top of the hill. He opened a trunk and tried to pick up the ammunition. He did it once, couldn’t get it right, and did it again, still failing. He became very irritated. I don’t know what he did next, but he loaded the gun with real bullets and fired. I heard a ‘whoosh’ as the bullet went past my ear while I was on the hill. I was lucky to be unhurt. There were many such incidents during the making of Sholay, and it remains a very special film for all of us.”
This incident underscores the intense and sometimes perilous nature of filmmaking in those days. Despite the risks and challenges, the cast and crew’s dedication brought Sholay to life, cementing its place in cinematic history. Even decades later, stories like this remind us of the passion, risks, and unforgettable moments that defined the making of this legendary film.
