Actor Ranbir Kapoor recently revisited memories of the legendary Holi celebrations hosted by his grandfather, filmmaker Raj Kapoor, describing them as overwhelming rather than festive from a child’s point of view. He spoke about the gatherings during an interaction at the International Film Festival of India, reflecting on what it was like growing up amid some of Hindi cinema’s most iconic traditions.
The Holi parties at RK Studio were once considered a staple of the film industry’s social calendar. Known for their scale and energy, the celebrations reportedly brought together actors, directors, musicians, technicians and crew members, cutting across hierarchies in an otherwise star-driven ecosystem. But for a young Ranbir, the atmosphere felt intimidating. “I was really young, so it was a very scary environment for me,” he recalled. He described scenes where “everyone was coloured in black and many other colours, sabko aise truck mai faika ja raha hai,” referring to guests being playfully lifted and tossed into trucks, soaked in colour and water as part of the revelry.
Filmmaker Rahul Rawail, who was present during the conversation, agreed that the chaos and high-spirited nature of those gatherings were part of their charm. Ranbir also highlighted what made those celebrations distinctive. “What I have heard is that not just the actors and actresses, it was everybody in the film industry,” he said, noting that the parties were open to workers across departments.
Over the years, such large-scale Holi gatherings have become rare, especially after RK Studio was sold following a major fire in 2017. The stories, however, continue to offer a glimpse into a different era of Bollywood camaraderie.
