Hoppers Movie Review | Eye-Opening Family Fun

Hoppers is built on a fun idea that slowly reveals a serious core. Directed by Daniel Chong (We Bare Bears: The Movie), the film follows Mabel Tanaka, voiced by Piper Curda, a teenager who loves animals and is deeply upset when a construction project threatens and displaces the pond and forest near her home. When scientist Dr. Sam (Kathy Najimy), Mabel’s biology professor who invents a hopping technology – a way for humans to “hop” their minds into lifelike robotic animal bodies, Mabel volunteers and becomes a mechanical beaver. Her goal is simple – speak to the animals, understand what they are going through, and stop (restore) their habitat from being destroyed. But what begins as a heartfelt attempt to help soon grows into something far bigger, as her involvement sparks an animal uprising that moves beyond her control.

At first glance, the premise sounds playful, even silly. A robotic beaver leading woodland creatures into resistance promises physical comedy and bright, energetic chaos. Yet the film is not just a children’s adventure. It wraps a serious thought inside a story told from a young kid’s point of view. Chong, who created We Bare Bears, often tells stories about characters who do not quite fit into the world around them. In that series, animals tried to adjust to human society. In Hoppers, the idea flips. A human steps into the animal world instead. That reversal gives the film its emotional weight. It is not only about saving trees. It is about what happens when someone truly sees life from another side.

The mind-transfer device is more than a comic trick. This is not a simple body-swap joke. Mabel does not just talk to animals from a distance. She lives as one of them. She feels their fear of losing home and their confusion at human expansion. The film uses this science-fiction idea to question what we call development. As we chase growth and convenience, we often treat land, water, and forests as resources meant only for human use. We speak about climate change and ecological balance, yet we continue to damage the very systems that sustain life. The animals in the film are forced to leave their pond when it is threatened. They adjust, as wildlife often must, but that does not mean they are unaffected. Through Mabel’s eyes, the audience is asked to notice what usually goes unseen.

There is also a sharp contrast between how the animal kingdom and human society operate. The film hints that animals follow their own rules closely, acting for survival and community. Humans, by comparison, frequently bend rules for profit or personal gain. While the animals in the story eventually organize and push back, especially once Mabel connects with them, their struggle reflects a real-world truth – wildlife rarely has a voice in decisions that reshape their habitats. By placing a teen at the center of this conflict, the film softens its message without weakening it. Mabel means well, but she does not fully understand the chain reaction her actions will cause. Her journey becomes a lesson in responsibility. Once you understand a problem, how far should you go to fix it, and at what cost?

If the film manages to balance its humour with emotional honesty, it becomes more than family entertainment. What starts as one girl trying to save a pond can grow into a broader reflection on empathy, accountability, and coexistence. Beneath the bright animation and comic rebellion, Hoppers asks a quiet but important question – if we truly understand the impact of our choices on other living beings, will we continue as before, or will we choose differently?
