Hailey Bieber is opening up about her emotional and unexpected journey into motherhood, revealing that her pregnancy came as a surprise amid concerns about a pre-existing medical condition. During a candid conversation on the SHE MD podcast, the Rhode founder shared that she had been diagnosed with a uterine septum before conceiving her now 16-month-old son, Jack Blues, whom she shares with husband Justin Bieber.
When asked whether she and Justin had been actively planning to start a family, Hailey admitted that the pregnancy was unexpected. “It was a surprise,” she said, reflecting on the moment she found out she was expecting. While the news ultimately brought joy, it also carried an undercurrent of anxiety due to a prior medical diagnosis that had raised concerns about potential complications.
Hailey revealed that her OB/GYN, Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi — who also co-hosts the podcast — had previously identified a uterine septum during an examination. A uterine septum is a congenital condition in which a thin wall of tissue divides the uterine cavity. The condition can vary in severity, depending on the size and thickness of the tissue.
“Dr. A kept saying, ‘We need to look at this and keep an eye on it before you get pregnant because it could potentially be an issue,’” Hailey recalled. At the time, surgery had even been discussed as a possible future option to correct the septum and reduce risks associated with pregnancy.
Dr. Aliabadi explained that a uterine septum affects approximately 1 to 3 percent of women. While some cases are mild and may not lead to complications, moderate to severe cases can increase the likelihood of miscarriage or preterm delivery. In Hailey’s case, the condition was categorized as moderate.
“With moderate, you have a higher risk of miscarriage,” Dr. Aliabadi said during the discussion. She estimated that Hailey faced a roughly 25 to 40 percent chance of miscarriage, along with a 10 to 20 percent risk of delivering prematurely. Those statistics understandably weighed heavily on the couple during the early stages of pregnancy.
Hailey acknowledged that the possibility of preterm delivery was especially frightening. “Which I think was our bigger scare,” she shared, explaining that the uncertainty surrounding the baby’s arrival added emotional stress to what should have been a purely joyful time.
Despite the risks, Hailey said she felt an unexpected sense of calm and confidence. According to Dr. Aliabadi, Hailey remained remarkably optimistic, even when confronted with the medical data outlining potential complications. That mindset, the doctor suggested, played a meaningful role in how Hailey navigated the months ahead.
To ensure closer monitoring, Dr. Aliabadi administered the PreTRM Test, a specialized blood test designed to evaluate the likelihood of delivering before 37 weeks of pregnancy. The results provided much-needed reassurance: Hailey tested low-risk for preterm birth.
“I was convinced I was going to go into labor early because of my mom’s history,” Hailey admitted. However, as the pregnancy progressed, her body charted its own course. The uterine septum expanded in a way that allowed the baby to grow safely, minimizing the complications doctors had initially feared.
Ultimately, both Hailey and her son emerged healthy. Now 16 months old, Jack Blues is thriving, and Hailey looks back on her pregnancy as a journey marked by vulnerability, faith, and resilience. By sharing her story publicly, she not only sheds light on a relatively common but often misunderstood condition, but also offers reassurance to other women facing similar diagnoses.
