Sunny Deol and Aamir Khan’s much-awaited collaboration Lahore 1947 has finally locked its release date. Backed by Aamir Khan Productions and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the historical drama is set to hit theatres on 13th August 2026, strategically timed just ahead of Independence Day.
The film marks the first-ever collaboration between Sunny Deol, director Rajkumar Santoshi and producer Aamir Khan — a combination that has already sparked massive excitement among fans of powerful, content-driven cinema. With only months to go before its big-screen debut, anticipation is steadily building.
Adding an emotional layer to the project, Aamir Khan recently revealed a heartfelt detail about the film’s origins. Remembering Sunny Deol’s father, legendary actor Dharmendra, Aamir shared, “This was one of Dharamji’s favourite scripts, and I am so glad he could see the film.” The statement has resonated deeply with fans, making the project even more special.
Sunny Deol also opened up about how Lahore 1947 came to life. Speaking to Zoom, he revealed that he and Rajkumar Santoshi had been discussing the subject for years. “It has been a subject Rajkumar Santoshi and I have been discussing over the years. We would keep trying to execute it,” he said. According to Sunny, the project gained momentum after the success of Gadar. “After Gadar, it became possible. Aamir came to me and said that he wants to make this project. Later, everything was a yes to me,” he added.
Describing the film as emotionally intense, Sunny shared that the narrative carries depth and powerful character arcs. The story is adapted from Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamyai Ni. Set against the backdrop of Partition, the film follows a Muslim family that migrates from Lucknow to Lahore and is allotted a haveli abandoned by a Hindu family. However, tensions escalate when they discover that the Hindu family is still residing in the house and refuses to leave.
Alongside Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, the film features Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal and Karan Deol in significant roles. With its emotionally charged storyline and Independence week release, Lahore 1947 is poised to be one of 2026’s most talked-about films.
