Dhanushâs D55 Shoot Begins

The buzz around Dhanush’s upcoming Tamil film, tentatively titled D55, has taken a decisive step forward. With legendary actor Mammootty officially coming on board, the makers have now announced that the film has commenced production. The launch was marked by a traditional pooja ceremony, signalling the beginning of what promises to be a high-profile and creatively ambitious project.
A ceremonial start for a high-profile collaboration
Directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, D55 features Sai Pallavi and Sreeleela as the female leads. While the film’s genre and plot details are being kept under wraps, the combination of talent involved has already generated strong anticipation within industry circles and among fans.

The technical crew is still largely under construction, with only composer Sai Abhyankkar confirmed so far. Known for his contemporary soundscape and youthful energy, Sai Abhyankkar’s involvement hints at a score that could play a key role in shaping the film’s tone. The remaining technicians are expected to be announced in the coming weeks as production progresses.
Mammootty’s Tamil return and fresh pairings
One of the most significant talking points surrounding D55 is Mammootty’s return to Tamil cinema after a gap of seven years. His last Tamil outing was Ram’s critically acclaimed Peranbu in 2019, a performance that remains widely regarded as one of the finest in his storied career. His inclusion in D55 adds considerable gravitas and cross-industry appeal to the project, especially given his selective approach to roles outside Malayalam cinema.

For Sreeleela, D55 marks her first collaboration with both Dhanush and Rajkumar Periasamy. The actress has been steadily expanding her footprint across industries, and this film represents a significant step in her Tamil journey. Sai Pallavi, on the other hand, shares a more familiar equation with the team. She previously starred opposite Dhanush in Maari 2 in 2018 and collaborated with Rajkumar Periasamy on Amaran in 2024, the Sivakarthikeyan-led film that drew attention for its scale and emotional heft.
On the production front, D55 is being backed by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films in association with RTake Studios. The project was initially announced under the Gopuram Films banner, with Anbuchezhiyan and Sushmita Anbuchezhiyan as producers, before undergoing a change in production houses. The current backing brings the film firmly into Dhanush’s creative ecosystem, something that often allows for tighter control over storytelling and execution.
With filming now underway, D55 is shaping up as one of the more closely watched Tamil projects on the horizon. Between Mammootty’s return, Dhanush’s continued push towards varied narratives, and Rajkumar Periasamy’s growing reputation, expectations are understandably high.
