Singer and actor Nick Jonas has spoken candidly about one of the most emotional chapters of his life—the birth of his daughter, Malti Marie Chopra Jonas, and the intense medical challenges she faced in her earliest days. Appearing on the Jay Shetty Podcast, Nick opened up about the fear, resilience, and gratitude that defined that period for him and his wife, actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
During the conversation, Nick became visibly emotional as he reflected on Malti’s journey, admitting that he still feels “awestruck” that he gets to witness her strength and magic today. For the first time, the singer shared details about the circumstances surrounding her birth, which he described as extremely intense and overwhelming.
Nick revealed that Malti was born prematurely, much earlier than expected. The couple had been preparing for her arrival in April, the year she was born, when they received an unexpected call that changed everything. Rushing to the hospital, Nick and Priyanka were confronted with a reality they hadn’t prepared for. Malti entered the world weighing just 1 pound and 11 ounces, and Nick recalled how fragile she appeared at birth.
“She came into the world under very intense circumstances, which I’ve never really talked about,” Nick shared. He described how she was underweight, weak, and struggling, requiring immediate medical intervention. The nurses in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) quickly resuscitated her and began the long process of stabilising her condition.
The months that followed were among the most challenging of Nick and Priyanka’s lives. Malti spent three and a half months in the NICU, a period marked by equal parts hope and fear. Nick revealed that the experience unfolded during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, making the situation even more isolating and emotionally taxing.
Despite the uncertainty, Nick and Priyanka committed themselves fully to being by their daughter’s side. They took turns doing 12-hour shifts at the hospital every day, ensuring Malti was never alone. Nick described the hospital environment in vivid detail, noting how certain smells and sounds remain etched in his memory.
“It was both comforting and frightening to be there every day,” he said, adding that witnessing other families navigating similar struggles created a deep sense of shared humanity. Over time, Malti began to show signs of improvement. She fought daily, slowly gaining weight and strength.
Nick also revealed that Malti required six blood transfusions during her stay in the NICU. Each milestone, however small, felt monumental to the couple. After months of unwavering care and resilience, Malti was finally healthy enough to be discharged, allowing Nick and Priyanka to take her home—a moment he described as life-changing.
Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra married in 2018 in a grand celebration held in Rajasthan, featuring both a traditional Christian wedding and a Hindu ceremony. The couple welcomed Malti via surrogacy in January 2022, later sharing her journey with fans in a deeply personal note.
Today, Malti is thriving, and Nick’s reflections underscore a profound sense of gratitude. His emotional account resonated with listeners, offering a rare glimpse into the vulnerability behind the public personas of the global stars.
On the professional front, Nick Jonas is set to appear alongside Paul Rudd in the upcoming film Power Ballad, directed by John Carney, which is scheduled for release on June 5 this year.
