Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda starrer Saiyaara, which hit theatres in July last year, turned out to be a massive blockbuster and one of the most talked-about films of the year. Directed by Mohit Suri, the romantic drama earned praise not only for its emotional storytelling and strong performances but also for its soulful and chart-topping soundtrack.
The film’s music album featured seven songs composed by an impressive lineup including Mithoon, Sachet–Parampara, Tanishk Bagchi, The Rish, Vishal Mishra, Faheem Abdullah, and Arslan Nizami. Tracks like the Saiyaara title song, Dhun, and Barbaad struck a chord with audiences and played a key role in the film’s popularity.
Now, music composer Amaal Mallik has credited the film’s hit music as a major reason behind Saiyaara’s success, while also praising director Mohit Suri for giving composers the creative freedom they need. In an interview with Pinkvilla, Amaal said, “Why does a movie like Saiyaara do well? Because Mohit Suri lets composers breathe, lets them do their heart’s work.”
While acknowledging the powerful performances by the lead actors, Amaal firmly stated that the music carried the film. “Amazing acting by Ahaan and Aneet in Saiyaara, but the music is the hero of the film,” he said, emphasizing how crucial a strong soundtrack is for romantic cinema.
Amaal also spoke about the challenges artists face due to excessive interference in creative decisions. Criticizing how songs are often altered by multiple stakeholders, he said such interference can damage a composition. “They will suggest something and spoil the song. Tomorrow, that song will release in your name. And if it doesn’t work, people will blame you for it,” he explained, stressing the importance of respecting artists and giving them proper credit and space.
In the same interview, Amaal revisited his recent revelation about struggling to bring Sonu Nigam on board for Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’s Mere Dholna 3.0. He shared that despite Sonu Nigam’s legendary status, several people doubted whether he was the right choice and suggested other singers like Arijit Singh and Vishal Mishra. “Even someone as iconic as Sonu Nigam is made to prove himself. One song changes everything,” Amaal said, highlighting the harsh realities of the industry.
