Happy Patel – Khatarnak Jasoos Review
Happy Patel-Smith – a bumbling Britisher who loves cooking and ballet, who is raised by former MI6 spy-dads, finds out he’s an Indian in his 30s. After finding out this ‘massive’ truth, he’s sent on a mission to India as an undercover agent to rescue a British scientist/chemist who is kidnapped by Goa’s notorious crime czarina, known as Mama to make a fairness cream.
Does he success in rescuing the scientist given that he failed the MI6 admission program 7 times (and was only given this assignment as he would blend well)? Who does this horrible Hindi-speaking Britisher meet along the way and does it help him find himself and succeed in life? To know the answers, one need to watch Happy Patel – Khatarnak Jasoos, and here’s our review of it.
What Works
The writing and acting – especially that by Mona Singh, is the best parts of this refreshing comedy that’s sure to tick a lot of people. PS: The makers have added a declaimer at the start of the film for you guys.
What Doesn’t Work
Given that previous Aamir Khan Production have delivered amazing tracks in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Delhi Belly, and Taare Zameen Par, the music of Happy Patel is underwhelming. They could have done better in term of costumes too!
Technical Analysis
Star Cast
When an artist wear multiple hats, doing justice to all is difficult, but Vir Das has managed to ace in all departments. When it comes to him playing Happy Patel, Vir has delivered over and above and there isn’t a single dull moment whenever he’s on-screen. He pretty much carries the entire film on his shoulders – and that mainly that to his attempt at playing a dumb NRI trying to speak broken Hindi.
After Vir Das, the next best thing in this unusual comedy is Mona Singh. The actress – who is known for roles such as Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, Munjya, 3 Idiots, The Ba***ds Of Bollywood and more, has played a character we would never expect of her. She’s slayed her part and every time she appears on screen, you know the unpredictable is bound to happen.
Mithila Palkar as Rupa is refreshing as despite having a girl-next-door image, she isn’t the type you would expect. She will surprise you with her sheer calibre. Sharib Hashmi as Geet is a delight to watch. He will make you laugh every single time. Srushti Tawade as Roxy plays a crucial part in the narrative despite limited screen time, and delivers.
Conclusion
It you love Delhi Belly or AIB content, this is sure to impress you! If not, skip it. The film has impeccable and unexpected performances by Vir and Mona that is sure to make you smile through out. Also, look out for the many iconic Bollywood references in the film and the between-the-line jokes, they are gems!
